Unless you are a very well-seasoned traveller, airports can often seem overwhelming, especially large international airports in unfamiliar countries. Our top tips will help you navigate them like a pro.

  • Be on time: As tempting as it is to cut down on travel time and get there closer to departure, it’s not worth it. Obey the golden travel rule of “arrive early” and you’ll reduce stress and find airport staff much more helpful. Allow the appropriate time for check-in, security and finding your gate, factoring in that unexpected delays can happen.

  • Get the terminal correct: The terminals are the buildings where you access your departing flight and where you will pass through once you have landed. Getting these numbers correct in a large airport that has multiple terminals is very important. When arriving at the airport, traffic and transport are often directed according to where you are departing from, so know these numbers before you travel. Transferring between terminals can be very time-consuming and stressful if running late! Most airports have maps available at information desks or digital versions on their websites. Take the time to look at them before you go.

  • Understand your boarding pass: It’s important to comprehend the information on your boarding pass. This includes gate number, seat assignment and departure time. Ask at the airline counter if you are uncertain of anything on your boarding pass.

  • Use technology wisely: Make sure your phone and any other devices are fully charged before you leave home. Take advantage of charging points at airport workstations in lounges and restaurants if needed. Fortunately, many airports offer free Wi-Fi, so check for these services before you fly. Research travel apps that make life in airports smoother – think airport lounge searches, currency convertors, translation services and flight schedules.

  • Pack for convenience: Think carefully about what you need to have quick access to. Essential items like passports and boarding passes must be on hand immediately. Clothing with good-sized pockets works well for this. Organise your carry-on luggage so that security checks are quick and flow smoothly if your bags are opened or checked. Be prepared for possible lost luggage issues by always including a fresh change of clothing and essential medications and toiletries in your carry-on bags. If you can avoid checking in baggage – do so. Waiting in queues for luggage on arrival can take a considerable amount of time and could even mean a missed connecting flight. Onboard bags mean you simply grab and go on landing and it’s worth trying to reduce your luggage, if practical, to get this right.

  • Take care of yourself: Ensure you are carrying bottled water to avoid dehydration if waiting in long queues or sitting onboard during delayed departures. Essential medications should be easily accessible if needed in an emergency. Many airports offer lounges with showers and even sleeping pods, which provide much needed rest and rejuvenation when needed.

Follow these tips to navigate even the busiest international airports with ease and confidence. Happy travels!
