Pressing “pause” after the school years have come to an end is a great way to reset and recalibrate before plunging into the tedium and responsibility that often comes with a new adult chapter. Regardless of whether school leavers are planning on studying further or taking their first leap into the workplace, a well-planned time-out between these milestones can be so much more than just a vacation. This period between school and the next big thing is an opportunity not only to travel and see the world but also a great way to learn, earn and return! Let’s look at how to get the most out of your “Gap” year.
What are your priorities?
This is a time when everyone seems to be asking you, “So what’s next in your life?” and you might not actually have a clear answer to that yet. Even if you do, planning for just one year ahead is far less overwhelming than trying to figure out any longer-term commitments at this point. So, use this opportunity to determine some less daunting priorities. Do you want or need to earn money during this time? Would you like to immerse yourself in a new culture? Is there a specific experience you are seeking to equip yourself for further study? Travel is the answer!
Have you considered all the options?
If you are fortunate enough to be able to leave home and travel during this time, then the choices are endless:
- General employment opportunities in foreign countries are always a proven way to combine work along with the desire to travel and see the world. Popular choices for young adventurers are au-paring, teaching, and working on cruise ships or yachts. Many other job opportunities can be found in the hospitality, tourism and healthcare industries.
- Work Exchange differs from general jobs in that they often offer accommodation and meals in exchange for your labour or services. This is an inexpensive way to travel – the most popular types of work exchange include working in a hostel, as a bartender, in an eco-community or as an au pair for a family. Try Workaway, which is a popular exchange organisation.
- Volunteering is a wonderful chance to give something back to the world while you see new countries and meet a diverse range of people. Most international volunteer programs require a fee which covers accommodation and food. Think charities, outreach, humanitarian aid and ecological programmes. Volunteer work can be physically demanding and some outreach programmes will take you to remote places with limited medical care and hygiene. Caring for others and working closely with ailing or destitute communities also requires mental fitness and strength.
- Internships are a great way to gain practical work experience and an opportunity to explore your particular areas of interest for further study or work development. These structured short-term working contracts usually offer a small remuneration for your participation. Research internships or work programmes in industries such as education, social upliftment, banking, technology, farming and health services.
- Adventure travel, if you are lucky enough to have the funds, is an enriching way to discover who you are while following your passion. Imagine travelling while indulging in photography, travel writing, painting, food tours, famous rail and road routes, sports or perhaps painting. This is a luxury afforded to only a few, but it is enriching and rewarding, and the memories will last a lifetime.
So – take the gap if you can. This is the time to explore who you are, discover new places and create memories that will sustain you forever. Remember, some countries may only require a tourist visa, while others require a specific visa to volunteer.
