Dreams of sunny European weather and the confines of school vacation dates often determine when families can travel. So, it’s no surprise that Summer is the most popular time to head out, especially in Europe. But it’s also high season at those times! The trade-off is often chocker block flights and a high demand for great accommodation. This means you pay a premium and you also face long queues and busy crowds at popular tourist spots. If you are one of those lucky people who can travel off-season, the benefits are well worth it.

The benefits of off-season travel

  • Cheaper airfares – Lower demand for seats means lower airfares. Look for low or shoulder season specials to reduce your travel costs.
  • Miss Europe’s strike season – Traditionally, airport staff tend to strike during high seasons when their efforts make the biggest statement. This causes delays and added stress to travel.

  • Cheaper accommodation – Like airlines, hotels still need to get bums in beds during low season, so many establishments offer off-peak travel discounts. In some instances, you can save up to 50% – or you can choose to spoil yourself to a more luxurious stay on the same budget.
  • Fewer crowds – The best part is less queuing! Getting through airport formalities is quicker and easier, and you spend less time in queues at tourist attractions, which means you have more time to enjoy your destination. Similarly, it’s much easier to bag the sauna, hot tub or the best pool lounger when you aren’t fighting the crowds.
